We had four guys from the FitzRoy Charity (Fekenham) come along for a 2 hour taster session on Thursday. Was a great session which I enjoyed nearly as much as them!
Kevin from the charity wrote some comments below:
What a great day. FitzRoy a
charity working to transform the lives of people with learning disabilities,
helping them live more independently at home and in the community, visited the
brilliant Barford Lakes.
Four of our members Perry, Danny, Chris and Tom
anjoyed a bespoke training session with Sarah, with just the right amount of
training followed by a fabulous fishing experience on Barford's Training Lake.
After a morning session teaching the basics and
catching roach, perch, gudgeon, crucian carp, rudd, skimmer bream and even an a
slimey eel, we had a health packed lunch then back to the lake where they all
caught big fish, the shreeks of joy could be heard all over Barford.
Everyone including the support staff Andy and
Kevin had an amazing day and by the time we returned to the day centre
the fishing tails had already started.
I would thoroughly recomend 'an
experience' at Barford Lakes as a learing and sensory activity and
would like to thank Sarah and Jack for making everyones day very
special.
Hope to come back soon. Kevin and Andy

Angling Training
Sarah Thomson (Shop and Fisheries Manager) is a qualified ADB Level II Angling Coach plus we have other Level II Licensed Angling Coaches who freelance at the Fishery. All coaches are experienced anglers on all types of waters and have a wealth of angling knowledge, we pick the coach that best suits your needs.
Coaching can provide a vital overview of the sport whilst instilling the need to respect and care for the lake, environment and fish.
We can provide training for beginners or current anglers who would like to enhance their knowledge and therefore give themselves more options when fishing.
Training
Adults (Beginners, improvers and advanced)
- 2 hours - £40.00
- 3 hours - £60.00
- 4 hours - £70.00
- 5 hours - £80.00
Additional Intermediate and Advanced courses can also be organised to help teach new fishing techniques. These provide valuable hints and tips from the local and national experts, coupled with hands on tuition and training.
Juniors (we would suggest that young anglers are over 6 years old).
Juniors - One to One Coaching
The initial session with a qualified coach would be for 2 hours and cost £25.00 which would include a day ticket and bait (Environment Agency rod license at an additional cost).
Juniors - Groups of 2–3 young anglers
The initial session with a qualified coach would be for 2 hours and cost £15.00 per angler which would include day tickets and bait (Environment Agency rod license at an additional cost).
Schools
Some schools hold activity weeks and incorporate a fishing trip within this. Daniel can offer 2 ½ hours tuition (spilt through the day) for an additional cost of £40.00. Along with a chat about health and safety, he will talk through different methods, shot patterns, the importance of feeding etc and put each angler on the right track before returning to them later on in the day. We can also provide hand outs.
The best option is to have an angling coach for the day which we can offer for school groups of 10 upwards. £15 per angler includes fishing, bait, equipment hire and coach for the day. EA Rod Licenses would be an additional £3.50 for a day license and £5 for an annual junior license
Bespoke Training
We are able to produce a tailor made day's training session. For more information on tailored training please contact us via email at sarah@barfordlakes.co.uk and we will see what we can do.
On the main site at Barford we also have a specially adapted Training Lake, which is very well stocked with small carp, brown goldfish, roach and rudd, and provides an excellent platform for any learning angler - it's a bite a chuck - and we only charge £2.50 per day ticket.
Angling Coaching Day 6th August

(Edited by: Sarah Thomson, 11th August 2008 16:52PM)
We had a very successful training day on Wednesday 6th August which saw 8 youngsters from the ages of 6 - 15 learning vital skills which was aimed at increasing their catch rate at the fishery.
Trying to re-learn the basics in a proper manner will hopefully give them on a good start for each fishing session and will in turn give them a more productive day on the lakes.
The session covered a bit of theory in the morning and some practical angling skills in the afternoon.
Within the theory Daniel went through line, floats and shot with them and Barford Tackle donated some floats, line and a plummet to make sure each angler had the proper gear for the job in hand.
Fish welfare and handling was also covered which included handling of fish with wet hands and equipment and the importance of this, calming of fish whilst out of the water and un-hooking of fish.
Daniel also demonstrated one of the most crucial things which are largely missed, plumbing the depth and the reasons why.
Anglers were also shown how to make paste and taught how essential feeding a swim is.
Sarah and John were also on hand to encourage and help out. A great day was had by all concerned and most of the anglers caught fish and all will take some knowledge away from the day which will help them to have more productive angling sessions in the future.
A goodie bag, with handouts from the day, a Sensible Fish Care Guide, a float and disgorger was given to all the anglers that attended and all the bait was provided on the day. The cost was £12 and we hope to run another event of this type soon. If you are interested in attending a Training Session then please email me by clicking here.
